Every year around January, New Year’s resolutions get a bad rap.

You hear things like “They don’t last,” or “People give up by February,” or “Why wait until January 1st to make a change?”

But here’s my honest take: New Year’s resolutions work—period.
And I say that from lived experience.

Years ago, I had a friend who made New Year’s resolutions a real event (shout out Kelly). Every year, we’d do the polar plunge at Sewell Park, grab sushi at Wok & Roll, then sit down and actually talk through our intentions for the year ahead. On the surface, it might sound a little wackadoo—but it was genuinely transformational.

Because of those conversations and commitments, I changed jobs. I increased my income. I bought a house. I started a business (SWT). I shifted who I spent time with, played more music (was even in a few bands), and built a life that felt more aligned with who I wanted to be.

That didn’t happen by accident.

The Real Power of a Resolution

The magic isn’t in the date on the calendar—it’s in putting pen to paper and getting honest about what you actually want.

When you write your goals down, they stop being vague ideas floating around in your head. They become real. And when you turn those goals into a map with actionable steps, they become achievable.

Even more powerful? Sharing those goals with other people.

Accountability changes everything. When someone else knows what you’re working toward, it’s harder to quit. They can check in on you, encourage you, and sometimes even connect you with resources or opportunities that help move you forward.

You’re no longer doing it alone.

Why Resolutions Get a Bad Reputation

I don’t think New Year’s resolutions fail because the idea is bad.
I think they fail because most people don’t actually make a plan.

Saying “I want to get in shape” or “I want to be healthier” isn’t enough. Without clarity, structure, and consistency, motivation fades fast.

That’s where things fall apart—not because the resolution didn’t work, but because there was no roadmap to follow.

Here’s the truth we see every day in the gym:

Consistency over time will take you farther than a burst of effort for a week or two.

You don’t need to be perfect. You don’t need to go all-in overnight. You need a plan you can stick to—and the support to keep showing up when life gets busy or motivation dips.

That’s true for fitness.
It’s true for business.
It’s true for relationships.
It’s true for life.

So… Do New Year’s Resolutions Work?

Yes—when they’re done with intention.

They work when you:

  • Get clear about what you actually want
  • Write it down
  • Create a realistic, actionable plan
  • Share it with people who will hold you accountable
  • Commit to consistency, not perfection
